Menthol is a terpenoid, found in the essential oils of the mint family (Mentha spp), such as peppermint, spearmint and others. Menthol (C10H20O) is solid at room temperature, forming long crystals that have a fatty touch. Several isomers of menthol exist, some with a menthol smell, others without. Normally occurring menthol, with the strongest smell, is (-)-menthol (lower left in figure below).

Product Applications:

1. In food field, it is often used as additives. With distinct fragrance smell, menthol can promote digestion and increase appetite.

2. In daily necessities field, menthol can be added into a large amount of oral cleaning products, such as dentifrices, tooth powder and mouthwash.

3. In pharmaceutical field, with the function of inhibition and paralysis to sensory nerve endings, menthol can be used as counter irritant.
